Life in the World: Celestials and Fiends

As has already been noted, the World of Ere by default does not include use of the alignment system. As such, Ere’s cosmology does not include alignment based Outer Planes. This does not, however, preclude the existance of celestials and fiends in the Campaign Setting.

This article explores the new origins and roles of moral aligned outsiders in the World of Ere.

The Previous Age
Long ago, before the rebirth that was Saint’s Landing, or the Stillness, long before the end of what is known as the Previous Age, there existed, for lack of a better word, a whole new world on Ere.

Many, vast continents rose from the azure oceans and upon them lived races whose names and appearances are unknown in the present day. Many scholars hold theories on the nature of these societies and the people that built them, but thanks to a complete lack of records and the divination fouling existance of the Stillness, they remain only that.

The world and its metaphysics was different as well. It sat upon a sea of the elements, fire, water, earth, air, positive energy, negative energy and shadow. And around it was a ring composed of the solidified worldviews of the people of the plane. From this ring sprang creatures borne of the pure essence of Morality; celestials and fiends.

Somehow, the people of the world learned to summon these creatures and bind them to the mortal realm to be servants and defenders. Wars erupted, fueled solely by the opposing worldviews of the people involved. In the end, the constant war took its toll on one such society and only their outsider servants remained.

Into the world were born three great and eternal kingdoms, one of Angels, one of Demons and one of Devils. Even as they began to build their own cultures and lives, the mutual hatred instilled in them by their masters constantly drove them to brutal war. A cycle of destruction and rebirth went on for millennia as other cultures of the world rose and fell around them.

Then the world ended. There is no record of how this occurred, save for cryptic memories left over in the minds of the outsiders who survived. But end it did and the world collapsed into the chaotic Stillness that lasted until Saint’s Landing.

Survivors
Even a cataclysm that shattered the plane could not break the souls of the most powerful outsiders, and a number of solars, devas, pit fiends and balors survived to rejoin the world in the Current Age.

Without the ring of the Outer Planes from which they drew power, there is little chance for these mighty beings to once again rise to the power they once knew in the Previous Age, but still, they strive to recoup their losses and carry out their own agendas.

Celestials
Over the past five thousand years, the celestials have spent much of their time searching for truly Good beings to ally with. But without access to spells like detect good, these beings are left in an unfamiliar position; learning about people through social interaction.

Attempting to blend into society, these celestials are sadly susceptible to falsehoods and trickery, sometimes finding themselves the pawns of dark schemes. The wrath of such wronged celestials is legendary as is their loyalty to those who earn it.

New celestials are born, not made, the children of the remaining solars and devas, their bloodlines are weak, but sustainable. A newborn celestial is typically a lantern archon, though through rituals and practice, they can grow and transform into other forms.

These new celestials are not beholden to the ‘Always Good’ alignment, though they retain the benefits of the Good Subtype and any DR they gain.

Demons
The first actions of the first balors to awaken on Ere was to attempt to rebuild their hoards. Immediately, they assumed humanoid form and sought out demi-humans capable of transmutation magic. They found the fledgling Church of Kayda and imparted to them the method by which a humanoid could be transformed into a demon.

The Kaydans complied, providing the balors with their succubae and vrocks and such, but secretly, they bent the demons’ knowledge to their dark god’s whims, eventually giving birth to the first Five Kaydan demons who expelled the true demons from the Church.

The suddenness and ferocity of their betrayal earned the Kaydans the grudging respect of the demons, who abandoned any attempt to exact revenge to instead put their new minions to the task to corrupt and torment Ere-borne mortals.

Devils
True to their nature, the surviving pit fiends did not give into impulse and open themselves up to betrayal by the Kaydans. Instead, they infiltrated their ranks and learned the ways of demon creation. Soon, they were able to use the same methods to revive their ranks, even improving upon them.

Today, devils, like celestials are born, not made, though their breeding is strictly controlled by the pit fiends in a form of eugenics that forms a backbone of their long term plans.

The devils hope to eventually take back the world by force; first subverting key institutions, then marching on the weakened world of demi-humanity. They are confounded, however, by the presence of spirit beasts, some of whom have displayed a natural animosity toward outsiders and by the Kaydan Church, which seems as bent on eliminating the true fiends as it is on its other machinations.

Game Information
Unlike other creatures, Celestials and Fiends retain their alignment subtype and alignment based DR. Effectively, in the Ere Campaign Setting, this means that only an angel can pierce a fiend’s DR and visa versa.

Because of this increased difficult in harming them, these creatures have their CR increased by 1.
