Prestige Classes --  Alchemic Warrior

Alchemical Warrior
”You have your swords and your bows, your martial skill and your years of training. I have taught myself since I was fifteen to carefully mix and distill weapons of my own – to wield them as you do your own weapons. Now let’s compare – your steel to my flame and acid!” ~ Tover Brightvale, Alchemical Warrior.

Spellcasters do battle with their magic. Warriors do battle with their weapons. Alchemical Warriors do battle, it can be said, with their skills. While alchemy represents only the occasional tool to the normal adventurer, an alchemical warrior seeks to use these devices to their greatest potential, blending their science with special training with their unique weaponry and equipment.

Alchemical warriors depend heavily on their skill and crafts to solve problems. To this end, they prize variety in tactics above all else and carry multiple types of alchemical item to get the job done. Often, they are all too well aware that their fighting style is not widely known or accepted. Because of this, they take any opportunity to show off what they can do with alchemy and to educate their allies.

Alchemical warriors approach combat with an analytical eye, taking time, if possible to size up their opponents and weight their options. There is not shame in the alchemical warrior’s mind of retreating to formulate a new plan of attack and or replenish their stock of weapons.

It is uncommon for alchemical warriors to even know others of their kind exist, much less work with them. When they do discover others, however, alchemical warriors are often eager to share and compare notes. There are no formal organizations dedicated to the practice, but there are a number of organizations the understand and even fund such characters.

Becoming an Alchemical Warrior
Rogues and bards are those most likely to take enough interest in alchemical science to become alchemical science, finding the pursuit of a new fighting style both engaging and challenging.

Rangers, barbarians, druids and fighters too sometimes take up the mantle of alchemical warrior to give them an edge in combat that conventional methods don’t. These alchemical warriors tend to focus on the specifically weaponized forms of alchemy, such as alchemist’s fire and acid instead of the array of other options at their fingertips.

Primary spellcasters, such as sorcerers, wizards and clerics rarely become alchemical warriors, snubbing the idea of depending on something other than magic to get a task done. Those that do follow this path, however are some of the most impressive, using alchemy to supplement their casting and throw opponents off balance.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies:
The Alchemic Warrior gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Chemical Soldier (Ex): Alchemical warriors train themselves in the martial use of grenade-like weapons (alchemist’s fire, acid, burst water, etc) and gunpowder explosives. They make attacks with such weapons as if they were ammunition, able to draw and throw as many as they are their base attack bonus allows.

Efficient Alchemy (Su): Masters at improvisation, alchemical warriors learn how to create their weapons with alternative ingredients that are less expensive. Whenever an alchemical warrior makes a craft (alchemy) check, he may decide to reduce the base cost of his materials by the noted percentage, increasing the number of such items he can create in that amount of time as well. If he chooses to do so, he cannot create items enhanced by his Concentrated Brew, Potent Brew, or Expansive Brew class features with the same craft check.

Calculating Eye (Ex): Scientists by nature, alchemical warriors quickly analyze combat situations and know just where to strike to greatest effect. He adds his Intelligence modifier to attack rolls.

Concentrated Brew (Ex): By second level, the alchemical warrior realizes the value of highly concentrating his concoctions. When he makes a craft (alchemy) check, he may decide to make a concentrated brew. Alchemical items thus created cost the normal price, but the splash damage indicated increases by the indicated amount. This ability cannot be used in conjunction with Potent Brew, or Expansive Brew.

Potent Brew (Ex): By fourth level, the alchemical warrior, through trial and error knows how to mix alchemical concoctions to make them more destructive on a direct hit. When he makes a craft (alchemy) check, he may decide to make a potent brew. Alchemical items thus created cost the normal price, but the damage indicated for a direct hit increases by the indicated amount. This ability cannot be used in conjunction with Concentrated Brew or Expansive Brew.

Far Throw (Ex): At 5th level, the alchemical warrior’s throwing distance is more impressive. When he throws a grenade-like weapon, its range increment is 20ft instead of 10ft.

Expansive Brew (Ex): At 6th level, the alchemical warrior manages to expand the area his weapons effect by thinning the formula. When he makes a craft (alchemy) check, he may decide to make a potent brew. Alchemical items thus created cost the normal price, but the area they effect with splash damage or other effects (such as that of a tanglefoot bag) increases by 5ft. This ability cannot be used in conjunction with Concentrated Brew or Potent Brew.

Special Blend (Ex): By tenth level, the alchemical warrior has his own special mix of chemicals that allow him to combine the effects of his brews. He can choose to use any two of the effects of his brews (concentrated, potent or expansive) on a single craft check, or he may create items with one of these effects at the price he pays for items created using Efficient Alchemy.
